PSHE

Personal, Social, Health and Emotional Education (PSHCE)

At Worthington Primary School

Intent

We firmly believe that PSHCE provides a foundation for children’s learning and development in all other areas. At Worthington School we value the importance of PSHCE in preparing children for the opportunities, responsibilities, challenges and experiences of modern adult life.

We aim to ensure all children:

  • Value themselves and others
  • Form positive relationships
  • Make sensible choices
  • Communicate effectively with others
  • Take an active part in the community
  • Become healthy and fulfilled individuals
  • Provide effective Relationship Education, Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education.
  • Can make safe choices and keep themselves safe on-line and off line.
  • Support the school’s approach to promoting British Values

Implementation

At Worthington Primary school we follow the Cambridge Personal Development Programme produced by the Cambridge PSHCE service. The programme is organised across the whole school as a 2-year rolling programme. The programme focusses on the four themes, which are linked to the seal themes. The themes are:

Myself and my relationships

Citizenship and Economics well being

Healthy and Safer lifestyles

Our teaching is also supplemented by enrichment topics such as E-Safety and Body Image. Our lessons are supported by bi-annual visits to the school of the Cambridgeshire LIFE education bus and Years 5 and 6 visit Warning Zone in Leicester. The school’s commitment and strategies for delivering Sex and Relationship Education and supporting effective SMSC and fundamental British Values is set out in our separate SRE Policy, SMSC Policy and British Values statement.

Impact

Our work in PSHCE seeks to prepare children for both secondary school but also their future life. They leave the school equipped with both the knowledge and skills to deal with the challenges and opportunities of secondary school, but also with a deep understanding of themselves and how to relate with each other. They have the specific knowledge, skills and confidence to deal with specific issues and to keep themselves and others safe.

Long Term Plan

We follow the Cambridge Primary Personal Development Programme

In the following plan, the whole school delivers the same theme at the same time, and covers the entire programme over the course of the two years.

For a more detailed plan for each unit please refer to the Year group learning Overview in the class section.
